 "description": "This layer quantifies the yearly amount of groundwater recharge likely to occur, based on the USGS National Hydrography Database (NHD) spatial assessment of groundwater recharge.  Groundwater recharge represents the portion of precipitation that percolates through the soil and enters underground aquifers. Approximately 50% of Maryland residents rely on groundwater as a drinking water source, particularly in Southern Maryland and on the Eastern Shore. While water scarcity is not currently as critical of an issue in Maryland as it is in other parts of the United States, groundwater recharge is a vital component of securing the water supply of the state for the future, particularly in the face of a growing population. Besides drinking water groundwater is important for maintaining flow of rivers and streams important for recreation and wildlife habitat. The underlying geology across the landscape is the primary driver of the rate that water enters unconfined and confined aquifers. The amount of impervious surface and soil condition also affect the amount of water reaching aquifers. \n\nThis data layer was created as part of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources \"Accounting for Maryland's Ecosystem Services\" program.
