Layer: Nitrogen Removal Potential Index (ID: 16)

Name: Nitrogen Removal Potential Index

Display Field:

Type: Raster Layer

Geometry Type: null

Description: This layer provides an index of the Nitrogen Removal Potential of forests and wetlands across the state of Maryland. Index values range from 1 (low) to 3 (high), based on a modified version of the USGS SPARROW (Spatially Referenced Regression on Watershed Attributes) model. The SPARROW model simulates simulates the loading of nitrogen and phosphorus across the Chesapeake Bay watershed based on land-use, incoming nutrients from other watersheds, and atmospheric deposition. To create the index, loading rates were designated as having low, medium, and high nutrient uptake rates based on a range of uptake rates for forests and wetlands taken from the academic literature. This data layer was created as part of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources "Accounting for Maryland's Ecosystem Services" program.
