Name: Nitrogen Removal Economic Value - dollars per yr
Display Field:
Type: Raster Layer
Geometry Type: null
Description: This layer quantifies the yearly economic value of nitrogen removal in Maryland's forest and wetland areas. Economic values are based on a number of factors, including the average cost to remove nutrients using best management practices, amount of funds provided for the BMP cost share program through the state and the Bay Restoration Fund , and the price on nutrient trading markets. The averaege value is $8.36 per lb nitrogen. Urban and agricultural lands are particularly important nutrient sources, and forests and wetlands in watersheds with high incidence of these land-uses tend to have high values of the nitrogen removal service. This service totals $402.6 million for Maryland yearly.
This data layer was created as part of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources "Accounting for Maryland's Ecosystem Services" program.
