A number of factors were used to calculate economic values, including cost savings from flood insurance benefits, average stormwater remation fees, and cost of installing alternatives for flood prevention and stormwater mitigation (buffers, bio-swales, detention ponds,etc). This is the most valuable service considered, totaling $3.1 billion in Maryland yearly. This data layer was created as part of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources "Accounting for Maryland's Ecosystem Services" program.
