The services shows wetlands location and classification as defined by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) Program. It also shows the MD Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Wetlands and Wetlands of Special State Concern. Wetlands were mapped by DNR using photography flown for the Digital Orthophoto Quarter Quads. These were flown over a period from 1988 to 1995. In Maryland certain wetlands with rare, threatened, endangered species or unique habitat receive special attention. The Code of Maryland Regulation (COMAR) title 26, Subtitle 23, Chapter 06, Sections 01 and 02 identifies the Wetlands of Special State Concern and afford them certain protections including a 100 foot buffer from development. The MD Department of the Environment is responsible for identifying and regulating these wetlands. |
